What inspired you to join FPC, and what stood out to you during the hiring process?

At 23, I had the opportunity to join FPC straight out of university after completing my Bachelor of Construction. I started in January on a major project at the Fonterra plant in Taranaki, which was an incredible way to kick off my career — being involved from early on gave me a solid foundation and accelerated my learning.

Before joining, I’d heard stories of intense hiring processes from my mates – one-way video interviews, multiple rounds, and long waits.

My experience couldn’t have been more different. I had a relaxed Teams interview right after a ski trip in Arrowtown.

What stood out was how much they cared about finding someone who would genuinely fit into the team. That emphasis on culture and connection really resonated with me.

Can you share a bit about your career path and how it led you to your current role at FPC?

I started by doing a bit of research into companies that aligned with my values and offered real opportunities to grow. FPC stood out not just for the scale of its projects but for the way it invests in its people.

From roof remediation work in Auckland for small works to a much larger scale at Fonterra Whareroa, I’ve already had a diverse range of experiences that have shaped my understanding of the industry and helped me build a strong foundation.

How would you describe the culture at FPC in three words?

Proud. Genuine. Industrious.

What’s something unique about working at FPC that you haven’t experienced elsewhere?

For a company of its size, the level of care and authenticity is remarkable. People genuinely look out for each other, and that creates a work environment where you feel valued – not just as an employee, but as a person.

What’s your favourite thing about your team or the people you work with?

The talent here is unreal. Everyone works incredibly hard, but what makes it special is the camaraderie. It feels like working with a big group of mates – there’s a great balance between professionalism and having a good laugh.

Can you share a moment when you felt especially supported or empowered by your colleagues or leadership?

There isn’t one standout moment – it’s been consistent. Being new and the youngest on the team, I expected to feel a bit out of place, but I was welcomed and supported from the start. That kind of environment makes a huge difference.

How has FPC supported your professional growth or personal development?

FPC has genuinely invested in my growth. From giving me exposure to different types of projects to encouraging me to relocate to Wellington, they’ve created opportunities that have helped me develop both professionally and personally.

What opportunities have you had to learn new skills or take on new challenges here?

Working across both small works and the main business has taught me a lot about the value of projects – how different scales require different approaches. Relocating to Wellington was a big step, but it’s been great for skill development and exploring a new city.

How does FPC encourage innovation in your role and/or across the company? Can you share an example?

As a quantity surveyor, I’m constantly looking for ways to add value and save money – whether it’s identifying opportunities within contracts or finding creative solutions. One standout example where the team did this was using custom-made 60m tarpaulins to weather-proof the gable-ends of existing coolstores during construction. It was an unusual approach, but it worked brilliantly and kept the project on track.

What part of your work at FPC makes you feel most proud or fulfilled?

Being part of something bigger – finding your place in a large project and knowing your contribution keeps the cogs turning – is incredibly fulfilling. Helping deliver complex, meaningful projects makes me proud every day.

If someone were considering joining FPC, what would you want them to know?

You’d be joining a team of highly skilled professionals who work hard and deliver exceptional results but also know how to have fun along the way. It’s a place where you’ll grow, be challenged, and enjoy the journey.

Honestly, it’s a decision no one would regret.
